The vertical forest of Dubai, by Stefano Boeri Architetti, an Italian firm, unveiled their design at the COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and will be the site of the next COP in 2023.

The project, commissioned by Impact One, represents the first Vertical Forest prototype for the MENA areas of the world, with the aim of integrating the benefits of urban forestation - fine dust absorption, microclimate regulation, and reduction of the greenhouse effect - with the innovations in the management of the water system in arid climates and the optimization of the production of energy from renewable sources.

Urban forestry concept

Vertical Forests consist of skyscrapers with planted facades, with the concept designed as a way to combine high-density residential development with tree planting in city centres.

Stefano Boeri Architetti has developed a reputation for buildings that host plants since conceptualising the Vertical Forest and building its first prototype in Milan in 2014.

It has since designed vertical forests for Eindhoven, Huanggang and Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, which all feature local plant species to suit their respective climates.

Sustainable building life cycle

Considerable attention has been given in the project to the management of the water cycle through desalination processes and the recovery of grey water, as well as to energy from renewable sources.

This is thanks to photovoltaic surfaces that will produce 5,100 kWh of clean energy, stored in a system of hydrogen batteries that will also power the processes linked to the building’s water cycle.

Among other aspects, research currently underway is aimed at identifying construction technologies, materials and strategies for optimising the water cycle and waste management in order to transform them into useful resources with which to ensure the sustainability of the building’s life cycle.

Based in Milan, with offices in Shanghai and Tirana, Stefano Boeri Architetti has been a dedicated contender in architecture and urbanism as well as in cultural, design, and interior design fields.

The studio has developed architectural designs and regeneration projects in complex environments and several continents including the Easyhome Huanggang – China and porotypes for vertical forests.
